DIY Solar Energy Guide

What Is Wind Energy?

Wind energy is the process of converting wind energy into electricity. Earth 4 Energy Wind GeneratorThis is done by using wind turbines or by using windmills. The wind turbine or the windmill collects the wind and changes it into electricity. This electricity is then moved into your breaker box. This way you can only use your regular utility only as a back up. And if you use more of the wind energy, it will push the electricity back into the box and make your meter turn into reverse. Wind energy is called a renewable energy source because it is an energy that keeps reproducing itself.

Why would you want to use wind energy? First of all because it can lower your utility bills a great deal. Using wind energy as your main source of energy and just using your bought electricity as a back up, will drop your monthly utility bills a great amount, and sometimes, especially if you use wind energy with solar energy, you can cut out the utility company all together.

There are two different kinds of wind turbines that produce wind energy. First there is the horizontal-axis. This turbine is sometimes as high as a twenty-story building and spans about 200 feet in length. Its large blades resemble airplanes propellers. This is the most commonly used wind turbine. The other one looks like large eggbeaters, but that one is not used as much.

There are wind power plants all over the place. Here you will find dozens or more wind turbines over a large area. These will produce wind energy for utility companies. They do not work for the utility companies; they generate the electricity then sell it to the utility companies.

There are also wind turbines available for residential use. Of course they are on a much smaller scale. There are a few things that you need to do before you can start producing wind energy for your home. The first step being that you have to make sure how much wind is in your area. You need to live in an area that has an average annual wind speed of nine miles an hour that is when a grid connection is not available. Where a grid collection is available, the wind speed is at least 10 miles per hour.

You can buy all the material that you need and build your wind turbine yourself. But to do this, you need to make sure that you are allowed to build one in the area that you live in. Also make sure that you know what you are doing so that it is up to code and works right.

Using wind energy is also great for the environment. It is a clean energy. It does not put out any gases or any other pollutants. So if you are using wind energy you will be doing your part in helping to protect our environment. Also if more people would use alternate power sources, then it could slow down the process of global warming.

If you are tired of paying those high utilities; tired of doing everything that you can do to lower the bill and they just continue to increase and you want to do your part to help protect our environment then using wind energy is the way to go.
