even pretty. And though there is quite a few around they are not the kind of windmill we are talking about. We
are talking about windmills that are also called wind turbines.
Windmills are kind of a simple machine that does a whole lot. What do they do, they collect wind and converts it
into energy. It works by rotating the blades around and pulling it into the turbine and changing it into energy
(electricity). This electricity can be used to power your house. So to now answer your question, you should know

Before you begin to build your windmill, there are a couple things that you should do first.
First take a good look around your home. How much energy are you wasting? How many appliances televisions, stereos,
alarm clocks and so on do you have plugged in that you never use? Do you really need all five televisions plugged
in. lessen your energy level, before you think about building a windmill. Next, you need to calculate the wind
speed in your area. Windmills need consistent wind speeds of seven to ten miles per hour to work properly. Check
the codes in your area to make sure that you can build a windmill and finally check and make sure that you have the
room to put one up. The windmill needs to be tall enough to tower over any trees in the yard, so that it can take
full advantage of the wind.
Now you are ready to start building. You will need four things to build a windmill.
- You will need a windmill base- this should be either concrete or sandbags.
- Next you will need the tower. This can be made out of 2x4 plastic PVC pipes or something similar to
this.
- The third thing that you will need is the windmill blades. These look close to airplane blades. You can
make them out of plastic, wood or buy them already made. Depending how tall your tower is will determine how
long the blades need to be.

- Lastly you will need a windmill Nacelle. This would have a gearbox for a windmill but you just need a shaft
that connect the rotor blades to the tower which will make it spin.
Now all you have to do is put it all together and you are in business. If you have any problems, there are many
sites available that can help you with knowing exactly how to put it all together. It will not take long for you to
see a major difference in your utility bill and do not forget that you will also be doing your part in protecting
our environment because windmills only produce clean energy.
